Lane Kiffin & LSU Reportedly Now Facing Expulsion From SEC Over Signing NFL Players

While LSU and head coach Lane Kiffin are leading the movement of signing athletes who were playing for NFL teams this summer, the rest of the SEC has no interest in the practice and is taking measures to stop the Tigers from having them in Week 1 of the new season.
Heading into Week 0 of the new college football season, the sport has been mired in controversy. College basketball has been dealing with it since last year, as professionals from Europe and the NBA’s G League have been allowed to join the amateur ranks and bank big bucks in NIL money. Now, the football side of college sports has been confronted with the same problem over the last few weeks.
Several rulings in state courts, including in Louisiana, have given certain athletes who signed deals with NFL teams this summer another year of eligibility. Some ethically questionable programs have jumped at the opportunity to snap those players up. The most notable was LSU, as it agreed to NIL deals with Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris. However, the signings received huge blowback from around the sport.
Last week, the Big Ten came out strongly against the rulings and signings by creating new conference bylaws that banned former NFL players from playing for Big Ten schools. The SEC, ACC, and Big 12 followed suit. However, LSU intends to move forward despite the new bans because they believe the legal rulings will protect them from punishment.

That isn’t sitting well with other SEC schools, and according to Yahoo’s Ross Dellenger, they are looking to take measures to stop them.
“High-ranking SEC university executives are exploring legal and internal avenues intended to address the school’s plans to add former professional athletes to its rosters, including extreme measures such as boycotting competition against the Tigers, sanctioning the school with probation or even expulsion, and/or filing a federal legal challenge.”
The report adds that the conversations are still in the early stages but are mostly between school presidents and their lawyers. So, it is not frustration from SEC officials but from member schools in the conference.
Tensions are allegedly high, and some of the penalties that could be levied on LSU are “boycotting competition against the Tigers, sanctioning the school with probation or even expulsion, and/or filing a federal legal challenge.”
On the idea of expulsion in what sources called “serious” conversations, an SEC stakeholder claimed, “It is fair to say we are discussing multiple options, including that. Enough is enough. This is ridiculous.”
