Junior kicker Tate Sandell made OU football history Saturday night, Nov. 1, at Tennessee when he scored his 10th field goal of 40 or more yards, beating the school record for the feat in one season.

But that’s not why the internet is talking about him.

In the words of commentator Kirk Herbstreit, his short shorts “should be a penalty.”

“(He) got his Daisy Dukes on and puts up another one,” Herbstreit joked after Sandell scored a field goal. He’s gone three for three against Tennessee tonight, and 14 for 15 overall this season.

Sandell’s first field goal of the night, which earned him the comment from Herbstreit, was a 55-yard kick, his third of the season and tied a Neyland Stadium record for longest in history.

He’s six for six beyond 50 yards this year. Sandell gave the Sooners their first lead of the night with a 51-yard field goal with 1:08 left in the first half, making it 13-10. He then extended the lead to 16-10 just before halftime, drilling a 40-yarder.

The kicker transferred from UTSA after two seasons with the Roadrunners, where he had a 82.6% average in his first year as a starter. Since getting to OU he’s had a 93.3% success rate.
