VITALS: This is the first game under new coach Collin Klein, who was a quarterback at the school during the early 2010s. Klein is one of the most celebrated players in school history and was a Heisman Trophy finalist his senior season. He replaced Chris Kleiman, who surprisingly resigned after finishing 6-6 last year. The Wildcats declined a bowl bid despite being eligible. Klein didn't fully take over the program until he finished his duties at the Texas A & M Aggies as offensive coordinator because they were playing in the College Football Playoff. The Wildcats return quarterback Avery Johnson, who is entering his third season as the full-time starter. Klein, who began his coaching career with the Wildcats, actually recruited Johnson to K-State before moving on to the Aggies. This is the Wildcats' second meeting against Nicholls. Last year it finished 4-8 under coach Tommy Rybacki. The bottom line is this is expected to be a tuneup game for the Wildcats. After the opener, they play against the Washington State Cougars. K-State feels its at an advantage this year after opening the season in Week 0 against the Iowa State Cyclones in Ireland. Many of the players, including Johnson have said, it created a disadvantage because it stunted momentum early in the season. After the loss to the Cyclones, the Wildcats defeated North Dakota but then lost three of the next four. It was the beginning of what turned out to be a disappointing season. The positive is the Wildcats are enjoying the new energy and excitement and energy surrounding Klein. A strong start to the season could lead to the Wildcats being in contention for the Big 12 title and a berth in the College Football Playoff.
