Toledo (+10) at Michigan State
Patrick: Michigan State University 28 University of Toledo 13
Mike: This line makes no sense. Both teams have new coaches and heavy attrition, true. But Pat Fitzgerald is a proven winner. Did the folks in Vegas think that new Toledo head coach Mike Jacobs came from Notre Dame University, not D-2 Notre Dame College? Sparty 31, Rockets 10
Jarek: Well, if upsets and chaos are going to be a common thing really early, this one could get really interesting. Rutgers and Georgia Tech have proven being a home favorite doesn’t mean a darn thing. Sparty wins, but barely. Michigan State 31 Toledo 27
Jon: I wouldn’t count out Michigan State this year just because Pat Fitzgerald is a good coach. I’m sure that they haven’t got their roster caught up to speed. And they do have no money. And they should blow out Toledo. Although, given it’s Pat Fitzgerald, maybe it’ll be Rock Fight, that’s what he likes to do. Sparty 27, Toledo 21
South Dakota State (+13.5) at Northwestern
Patrick: South Dakota State University 17 Northwestern University 12
Mike: A pick after Jill’s heart, I see. One thing I do know is that Northwestern plays down to FCS competition and SDSU punches up. Not sure this is an upset, but there will be some anxiety on the shores of Lake Michigan. Wildkitties 26, Jackwabbits 21
Jarek: This is one I agree with about the upset. I think SDSU gets this done, as Northwestern doesn’t have that football money until next year. Jacks 28 Northwestern 20
Jon: What the hell does Northwestern have? I would imagine this is a lot closer, low-scoring game than the bettors believe. Northwestern 18, SDSU 17
UCLA (-1.5) at Cal
Patrick: University of California Los Angeles 23 University of California 21
Mike: Who am I to pick against a former James Madison head coach? Bruins 34, Bears 21
Jarek: I’m not sure this one will be anywhere close to the line. In fact, I see a 2 score win. UCLA 27 Cal 17
Jon: This should be interesting, Saturday night. Quarterbacks Nico Lamaleava vs Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele. Nico is tough, good at running. JKS… well, I don’t remember him. Ha! Both teams have first-year head coaches, Cal Tosh Lupoi, and UCLA with Bob Chesney. UCLA 27, Cal 24
Notre Dame (-20.5) vs. Wisconsin
at Lambeau Field, Green Bay
Patrick: University of Notre Dame 36 University of Wisconsin 12
Mike: Badgers start the season with their toughest opponent on their schedule. Wisconsin might get to a bowl this season, but they’ll start the season 0-1. Irish 38, Stinkin’ Badgers 13
Jarek: Unless Luke Fickell has figured something out over the off-season, the Golden Domers shouldn’t have any issues here. Quasimodo 41 Culver’s 17
Jon: I kind of hope Wisconsin doesn’t just eat themselves. Luke Fickell hasn’t done much, and I have warned the Wisconsin people in my life that their current athletic director is not the good choice to hire new coaches. I suspect Wisconsin will be lacking in defense and be smothered. Notre Dame 38, Wisconsin 21
Ohio (+23.5) at Nebraska
Patrick: University of Nebraska 38 University of Ohio 9
Mike: Yes, Anthony Colandrea lost to Ohio in last season’s bowl game. But that Ohio team is gone…and he’ll have MUCH better teammates on the field in Lincoln. Huskers 48, Bobcats 10
Jarek: Thus begins the journey of the unknown entities that now represent the children of the corn. From players to coaches, we at least get to see a glimpse of what we could be capable of doing. Hopefully that’s winning and by a large margin. Nebraska 37 Ohio 10
Jon: I am looking forward to an offense that can move the ball and score over 32 points a game. I am looking forward to seeing our guards pull. I wonder how our quarterback play will be. Will we be calling “good Anthony” and “bad Anthony” the way that we used to address Brett Favre? Nebraska 35, Ohio 17
