The Oklahoma Sooners are 1-0 to start the 2026 college football season after a dominant 51-0 win over the University of Texas at El Paso Miners. The Sooners were dominant in all three phases of the game: offense, defense and special teams.

Star wide receiver Isaiah Sategna had a massive start to the season. He caught four passes for 76 yards and a touchdown. He also had two punt returns for 115 yards, including an 88-yard punt return for a touchdown. That marked the first punt return for a touchdown for Oklahoma since 2023.

Quarterback John Mateer spoke about Sategna's opening game performance.

"Super explosive," Mateer said via Oklahoma's Own. "Just put the ball in his hands, and he's going to go. He's a year better, and he was plenty good enough last year. To be with him is like a real brotherhood. I love seeing him succeed."

That relationship could become one of the most important aspects of Oklahoma's offense this season. Sategna was already the Sooners' leading receiver in 2025, when he recorded 67 receptions for 965 yards and eight touchdowns. He then opened 2026 by proving he can impact the game in multiple ways.

His receiving touchdown against UTEP came on a 34-yard pass from Mateer early in the third quarter. The encouraging part for Oklahoma is that Sategna did not need a massive receiving workload to change the game. His production came from both the passing game and special teams, giving offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle another way to manufacture explosive plays.

That versatility could become particularly valuable as the competition gets tougher. UTEP allowed Oklahoma to showcase its new-look offense in a comfortable setting, but the Sooners will face the Michigan Wolverines next week in a much more revealing test.

If Sategna can continue creating his kind of impact against better competition, he will give Mateer exactly what a quarterback needs: a trusted target who can turn routinge opportunities into game-changing plays. Oklahoma's opener showed that connection is already developing, and it could become a major part of the Sooners' ceiling in 2026.
