Mason Heintschel Throws For 7 Touchdowns as Pitt Dominates Miami Ohio

Pitt couldn’t have asked for a better start to the 2026 season, and sophomore quarterback Mason Heintschel was at the center of it.

The Panthers crushed Miami (Ohio) 59-14 Saturday at Acrisure Stadium, with Heintschel putting together a record-setting performance that immediately put him on the college football radar.

Heintschel Makes Pitt History

Heintschel was nearly unstoppable from the opening kickoff.

The sophomore quarterback threw seven touchdown passes, setting a Pitt record and leading the Panthers to a massive season-opening victory. Pitt jumped out to a 21-point lead in the first quarter and never looked back.

The performance was especially impressive considering the expectations surrounding Heintschel entering the season. Pitt returned the quarterback after he led the team in passing as a true freshman in 2025. He was also selected as one of the Panthers’ captains for 2026.

Pitt’s Offense Is Rolling

Heintschel wasn’t the only reason Pitt dominated.

The Panthers consistently moved the football and found the end zone throughout the afternoon. Miami (Ohio) simply couldn’t keep up with Pitt’s offensive firepower.

Pitt built a 31-14 halftime lead before completely taking control in the second half. The Panthers’ defense also stepped up, allowing just one touchdown after halftime.

A Huge Opening Statement

Pitt entered the season hoping to take a major step forward after finishing 8-5 in 2025.

If Saturday is any indication, the Panthers could be a dangerous team in the ACC.

Heintschel’s record-setting performance gives Pitt plenty of optimism heading into the rest of the season, while the overall 59-14 victory provides an early confidence boost.

The schedule gets tougher from here, with UCF coming to Acrisure Stadium next Saturday before Pitt begins ACC play against Syracuse.

For now, though, the spotlight belongs to Heintschel.

Seven touchdown passes. A 59-14 victory. And a record-setting afternoon that could be the beginning of something special for Pitt’s sophomore quarterback.
