The Mississippi State Bulldogs, just 2-22 in the Southeastern Conference over the last three years, kick off the new season on Saturday night when they welcome a Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks squad on an eight-game losing streak to Starkville.

Mississippi State finished 5-8 last season, getting an unexpected bowl bid and losing to Wake Forest in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl to end the year with four straight losses. Quarterback Kamario Taylor closed the year strong, starting the final two games and finishing with 458 rushing yards and eight touchdowns to go with 629 passing yards and five scores. Fluff Bothwell is a threat out of the backfield after posting 677 yards and six TDs, but the defense finished next-to-last in the SEC. The Bulldogs brought back Zach Arnett as defensive coordinator for 2026 in hopes of improving that side of the ball.
Louisiana-Monroe comes off a 3-9 season and returns quarterback Aidan Armenta, who threw for 1,629 yards and 12 touchdowns in his first season as the starter. A strong running game a year ago lost all of the backs who made it happen and the Warhawks will rely on Louisville transfer Don Chaney Jr. and Arkansas Tech transfer Bryson Roland to keep the ball moving. All-Sun Belt linebacker Noah Flemmings leads the defense.
The Bulldogs and Warhawks tangle for the first time since 1997, with Mississippi State holding a 4-1-1 edge all-time.
