On Saturday evening, the LSU football program started the Lane Kiffin era with a bang by stomping over the Clemson Tigers by a score of 51-10 at home. While the game was delayed a couple of hours due to inclement weather in the area, the Tigers showed no signs of slippage, overcoming an early turnover and trouncing Dabo Swinney and company throughout the evening.
After the game, ESPN analyst and former college football quarterback Kirk Herbstreit broke down how impressed he was by what he saw from LSU.
“LSU made a real statement to start the season and their defense was a BIG part of that,” he wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Indeed, the Tigers’ defense was able to put relentless pressure on Clemson throughout the evening, including recording a pick-six in the first half to continue to run up the score on a hapless Clemson offensive attack.
The Tigers threw an interception on the first play of the game in this one on a bobbled pass, giving up a field goal in the process, but LSU dominated things from there, with quarterback Sam Leavitt quickly shaking off the miscue and torching the Clemson defense from that point on.
It’s hard to imagine how things could have gone any better in this one for newly minted head coach Lane Kiffin, who has been at the center of multiple controversies this offseason, including the manner in which he left Ole Miss to join LSU in the first place, as well as the team bringing in former NFL players recently.
In any case, LSU will next hit the field on Saturday for a home game against Louisiana Tech.
