It’s Week 3, and the LSU Tigers are headed into enemy territory to face the also-undefeated Ole Miss Rebels.
The headlines practically write themselves. The stage is set for what could be one of the most emotional and highly anticipated games of the college football season.
Lane Kiffin is back in Oxford.
For the first time since leaving Ole Miss for LSU, Kiffin will return to Vaught-Hemingway Stadium — only this time, he’ll be standing on the visitors’ sideline.
The LSU-Ole Miss rivalry rarely needs any additional storylines, but this year’s matchup has one that will be impossible to ignore. Kiffin’s return adds another level of intensity to an already heated rivalry, and there’s little doubt the reception awaiting him and his Tigers will be anything but welcoming.
LSU comes into this game 2-0 after a 45-14 victory over Louisiana Tech, but the final score does not tell the entire story.
The Tigers had a very sloppy first half, turning the ball over four times and taking just a 10-7 lead into halftime. Quarterback Sam Leavitt was responsible for three of those turnovers, throwing 3 interceptions, including a 100-yard pick 6. But LSU settled down after the break, scoring 35 unanswered points to turn a surprisingly close game into a comfortable victory. Leavitt bounced back to finish with 344 passing yards and 4 total touchdowns.
While the offense struggled early, LSU’s defense delivered another strong performance. The Tigers held Louisiana Tech to just 140 total yards and recorded 7 sacks, keeping the Bulldogs’ offense in check throughout the night.
However, turnovers are something LSU will need to clean up and quickly. The Tigers were able to overcome 4 giveaways against Louisiana Tech, but they won’t have the same margin for error Saturday night in Oxford. Against a talented Ole Miss team in a hostile environment, taking care of the football could be the difference between leaving with a statement win or suffering the first loss of the Lane Kiffin era.
According to our friends at FanDuel, LSU is currently a 2.5-point favorite over Ole Miss, with the over/under set at 58.5 points. However, expect plenty of movement in those numbers as Saturday’s highly anticipated matchup approaches.
Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford.
