On Saturday, the Alabama football program kicked off its 2026 season with a comfortable home win over East Carolina by a score of 48-10. It was a strong debut for quarterback Keelon Russell, who completed 18 of his 30 pass attempts for 256 yards on the afternoon.

Still, after the game, Crimson Tide offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb wasn’t fully satisfied with the team’s performance.

“We came out flat. Guys weren’t ready to play,” said Grubb about the team’s performance after halftime, per Michael Casagrande of AL.com on X, formerly Twitter.

Indeed, the Tide took a dramatic step back in production in the second half, mustering just 10 points in the second frame after putting 38 on the board in the first. Of course, against an overmatched opponent, it didn’t end up mattering, but it’s not a habit that Alabama will want to fall into as the season continues.

This year, Alabama is looking to get back into the title discussion for the first time in several years after an underwhelming first couple of seasons under head coach Kalen DeBoer.

Last year, the Crimson Tide made the playoffs but were demolished by the eventual national champion Indiana Hoosiers in the Rose Bowl game, making it clear that the team still had a way to go in order to be real contenders again.

The Crimson Tide raised eyebrows prior to the season by naming the freshman Russell as their starting quarterback, and he certainly put many of his impressive talents on display, at least during the first half, on Saturday.

Alabama will next hit the field on Saturday for their first road game of the season against Kentucky.
