Comfort Is Biggest Key For Kansas State QB Avery Johnson This Season

Kansas State Wildcats quarterback Avery Johnson took somewhat of a step back last season as a junior.
Wildcats coach Collin Klein wants to make sure it doesn't happen again. The plan is to keep Johnson as comfortable as possible on the field. It appeared that way in last Saturday's 71-3 victory against Nicholls at Bill Snyder Family Stadium. He completed 15 of 21 passes for 199 yards and three touchdowns. He surpassed Will Howard for the school record in passing touchdowns.
Here's what Klein had to say about Johnson's first effort under a new coach.
"Well, I thought his pocket presence was really good," Klein said. "His decision-making on third down and distributing the football. Thought he was accurate. Was able to be decisive in his decision-making. There were a couple times they covered us and had us, and he was decisive. Pulled the ball down and kept us in second and two. And I thought he made really, really good decisions, and I thought his communication on the sideline was really good- fixing problems, thinking of next steps, and with the guys around him."
Johnson also rushed four times for 23 yards and a touchdown. This is exactly the type of game the Wildcats want from him. He made solid throws within the offense, avoiding trying to do too much. Of course, the degree of difficulty will start to increase as the season progresses.
The Wildcats get their first real test Saturday at home against the Washington State Cougars. After facing the Tulane Green Wave the following week, they then open Big 12 play against the Cincinnati Bearcats.
K-STATE MASCOT HAS LONG DAY
Everyone in attendance at Bill Snyder Family Stadium Saturday was excited for every touchdown the Kansas State Wildcats
The mascot can blame the impressive showing by Wildcats for the sore upper body. In the first game under coach Collin Klein, K-State put on a show. It was just five points off the school's single-game record. The Wildcats were up 36-3 at halftime before scoring 35 in the second half.
