‘SEC Execs Will Meet to Vote on Expelling LSU From the Conference’: Major Update Emerges on Lane Kiffin-Created Drama

According to a new report, top officials from SEC schools are expected to meet soon to potentially vote on whether or not they still want Lane Kiffin and LSU in their conference.
At a 1:00 PM ET federal court hearing in Birmingham, AL, the SEC will ask permission to exercise its First Amendment right to enforce their conference rules, such as expulsion, following the recent roster drama created by LSU.
Once a ruling is made during the hearing, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that school decision-makers will then meet for a monumental vote. “Within that [federal court] filing, they made it clear that on Thursday, the presidents and chancellors are going to meet to discuss expelling LSU from the league.”
Thamel notes expulsion is unlikely, but admits it is “bananas” that these steps had to be taken in recent days.
How the Lane Kiffin & LSU roster drama all started… and ended
The saga all started in August after several court rulings, including in Louisiana, gave over a dozen athletes who were just playing for NFL teams in the summer an extra year of eligibility in college football. Kiffin jumped at the opportunity to add players who were in NFL camps this summer and inked Ole Miss alums Dae’Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris to NIL deals.
The pushback to the decision was immediate and the Big Ten, SEC, ACC, and Big 12 created new bylaws banning players that had signed deals with NFL teams to return to play in college football. However, LSU planned to stay the course and have Harris and Wright in uniform for their Week 1 clash against Clemson, despite rumors that SEC executives were considering expulsion from the conference.
On Saturday morning, after it was revealed that Wright and Harris would not suit up, Thamel reported that LSU submitted a roster of 103 players. Two short of the college football limit. Suggesting that they were keeping the door open for Harris and Wright to be in uniform at some point during the season.
However, on Tuesday night, ESPN reported that LSU filled the final two spots on the roster with two other players — cornerback Aidan Anding and defensive end Gabriel Reliford. The move seemingly ends the saga of the Tigers possibly using players who were on NFL teams this summer. The decision was likely made due to the growing threat of being kicked out of the most lucrative conference in college sports.
