ALLIANCE — The University of Mount Union looks to get back on track after falling to No. 5 Wheaton 24-23 to open the season. The loss snapped an 85-game regular season winning streak by the Purple Raiders.

Grove City is also looking for its first win of the season after suffering a 28-13 loss to No. 23 Cortland.

Mount Union fell from No. 3 to No. 7 this week in the D3football.com poll.

I'm at the University of Mount Union today where the Purple Raiders are set to host Grove City! Rain is falling at a steady pace but that has not dampened enthusiasm here on campus. This should be a great game and I will have live updates for you today!

Grove City vs. Mount Union football primer

• Grove City and Mount Union meet for the 10th time overall on Saturday. The Purple Raiders hold a record of 8-0-1 against the Wolverines.
• Mount Union and Grove City met last season. The Purple Raiders won 49-14.
• The 2025 game was the first time the two programs had played since the 1970's. The first game between the two teams was played on Sept. 26, 1970. Mount Union was victorious 21-18.

Meet the Grove City and Mount Union head coaches

• Andrew DiDonato, Grove City: DiDonato is in his 11th year as the head coach at Grove City and has a record of 67-36. The Wolverines have made three consecutive playoff appearances. Those are the only three playoff appearances in school history in Division III for Grove City. DiDonato won Presidents Athletic Conference titles in 2023 and 2024. The 2023 league title was the first in 26 years for the Wolverines. DiDonato was a quarterback in college for Grove City. He graduated as the school record holder in passing yards (7,509), completions (750) and touchdown passes (49).
• Geoff Dart, Mount Union: Dart is in his seventh season as the head coach at Mount Union. He has a career record of 67-6. Mount Union has qualified for the Division III playoffs in each year of Dart's tenure and he has won six straight Ohio Athletic Conference league championships. Dart led Mount Union to national title game appearances in 2022 and 2024. Dart was the offensive coordinator for the Purple Raiders for seven years prior to becoming head coach. He won national titles in that role in 2012 and 2015. He also won three national championships as a player as an All-Ohio Athletic Conference offensive lineman in 2002, 2005 and 2006.

Grove City vs. Mount Union game notes

• Grove City was on a 30-game losing streak before hiring DiDonato as head coach. It took DiDonato just eight years to record the first 10-0 season in program history.
• Junior cornerback Noah Wheeler is a ball hawk for the Wolverines. He had four interceptions last year and was a pre-season All American.
• Mike Holloman is a first-year starter at quarterback for Grove City. He passed for 276 yards and two touchdowns last week.
• Mount Union wide receiver Mason Ashby (Hoover) set a single game career-high with eight catches for 79 yards in Week 1 against Wheaton.
• Mount Union quarterback Mikey Maloney surpassed 3,000 yards passing for his career in Week 1. He now has 3,026 passing yards. He is the 17th Purple Raider signal caller to surpass that milestone.
• Maloney enters Saturday six touchdown passes short of 40 for his career. If Maloney is able to accomplish that, he would be the 13th Purple Raider quarterback in school history to throw for that many touchdowns.
• Mount Union senior center Patrick Lavelle is active in the community and represented Mount Union on the 2026 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.
• Former Louisville High School coach Chris Kappas in his first year back as defensive coordinator for Mount Union. He won a national championship in that role in 2015 and won National Coordinator of the Year in Division III. Kappas is a former player for the Purple Raiders that graduated in 2008.
