On Saturday, the No. 6-ranked Oregon Ducks lost to unranked Oklahoma State 39-31, and the college football world was stunned.

This comes after a close scare in Week 1 against Boise State, a Group of 6 team, so it’s safe to say that Oregon’s 2026 season hasn’t gone according to plan.

With the loss, many are calling for Dan Lanning’s job. Whether that sounds outlandish or not, the expectations were sky-high for the Ducks coming into this season, and they simply haven’t looked good in the early going.

CFB World Urges Oregon Ducks to Fire Dan Lanning

Immediately after the loss, the college football world didn’t mince words about Lanning.

“Nobody has underachieved with more resources than Dan Lanning. All these interviews and speeches with nothing to show. Oregon will forever be known as the uniform school. It’s time for Oregon to go hire someone real,” ex-LSU national champion and NFL DT Breiden Fehoko said.

“There are a lot of people to blame on this loss but Dan Lanning is A1,” added sports anchor Brenna Greene. “That fourth down call was unconscionable. Coaching malpractice.”

“Serious question. Has anyone in CFB done less with more than Dan Lanning at Oregon? Inherited a 10-win team, has all the resources, facilities, and recruiting success you could ask for, and just never gets it done,” added Gaby Urrutia of 247Sports.

Plenty of Oregon fans are fed up with Lanning as well.

“I’m done with college football until Dan Lanning is fired. I will pick back up when he is terminated,” one fan wrote.

Another fan said, “Dan Lanning will not end the season as the Oregon coach!”

Lanning has been one of the best coaches in all of college football since joining the Oregon program. Firing him this early would be shocking, and it’s a move the Ducks could end up regretting in the long run.

Still, with this loss, Oregon’s chances of making the CFP fall to around 60%, and their at-large percentage drops to 40%, per PFN’s CFB Playoff Meter.

The way college football works nowadays, it would likely take a lot more than a rough few games to get fired. There are a lot more financial factors that come into play with NIL, paying out the staff that was just fired, and then having to pay a new coaching staff.

The Ducks came into the season with massive amounts of returning talent and huge expectations surrounding the program. While this start obviously isn’t what Oregon fans were expecting, it remains to be seen if Lanning will actually be on the hot seat.
