Memphis returns to action at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium for its final non-conference game against UT-Martin. The Tigers will look to bounce back following a 38-20 loss against Boise State.
Jason Simpson, the father of NFL quarterback Ty Simpson, is in his 21st season with the Skyhawks, and they enter the game with a 1-2 record. UT Martin lost its season opener to Central Arkansas and last week’s road game against West Virginia.
The Skyhawks beat Chicago State 42-7 earlier this month, but the Cougars were playing their second game ever as a football program.
Simpson beat the Tigers in 2012 as UT Martin's head coach. In Justin Fuente's first game as the Tigers' head coach, the Skyhawks led for most of the second half and drilled a 43-yard field goal to secure the win in the closing seconds.
Grad student Julian Calvez has started all three games this season, but he hasn’t finished the last two games. Simpson elected to turn to redshirt freshman Tate Suber in both games, and it will be interested to see if Suber starts against the Tigers.
Suber has thrown for 359 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions in two games.
The Skyhawks have rushed for 525 yards through three games, and Tommy Ansley leads the team with 200 yards and five touchdowns on 34 carries.
The defense has allowed 31.7 points per game, but they lead the FCS in defensive touchdowns with two on the season.

What to watch for in Memphis’ second home game of the season:
It will be interesting to see how the Tigers respond after last week’s loss, especially on the offensive side of the ball. Memphis had a ton of success early in the game, but they couldn’t get anything going in the second half.
Tight end Hunter Tipton was one of the few positives in the game, and it will be interesting to see if continues to become Marcus Stokes’ go-to option in the offense. Tipton finished the game with 229 yards and a touchdown on nine receptions, and he was named the John Mackey Award Player of the Week.
Stokes threw for 384 yards in the game, and he will likely look to get more receivers involved against the Skyhawks.
Last week was also the first time this season that Charles Huff's offense hasn't been able to establish the run. Outside of Jaylin Carter's 80-yard touchdown run, the Tigers were shut down, but they should be able to get back to their rushing attack at home.
Memphis’ defense struggled against Boise State’s run-game, and Saturday should be an opportunity to bounce back and build some confidence. UT Martin has struggled to get things going on the ground or through the air, and the Tigers should have success against them.
The game against the Skyhawks will be a nice chance for Huff’s team to build confidence before conference play gets started on October 3.
