Penn State’s cushy non-conference slate has ended. Now it’s time to find out if first-year coach Matt Campbell’s Nittany Lions have staying power in the College Football Playoff race.
The nation’s 14th-ranked team in the LBM Coaches Poll will open its Big Ten conference schedule Sept. 26 with a matchup against Wisconsin at Beaver Stadium.
Penn State has mostly dominated its three non-conference opponents thus far, outsourcing Marshall, Temple and Buffalo by a total score of 127-22. None of those teams hail from power conferences, though, so it’s hard to read too far into the wins.
The Lions dropped each of their first six Big Ten games last season after a similarly impressive 3-0 start. That led to the firing of former coach James Franklin after his team was ranked in the top five nationally in the preseason.
They’ll look to avoid that kind of outcome with a favorable matchup against a Wisconsin team that has had trouble putting points on the scoreboard since the start of 2025. The Badgers averaged just nine points per game in Big Ten play a year ago and managed just a baker’s dozen in a 41-13 loss to Notre Dame on Sept. 6.
Penn State, meanwhile, has allowed just nine total points in the first three quarters of their games this season. Coach Luke Fickell’s team could therefore be in for some tough sledding playing on the road.

The Badgers and Nittany Lions will kick things off at the unusual time of 5 p.m. Eastern. That may be a bit of a curve ball for fans used to seeing kickoffs in the noon, 3:30 p.m. and primetime windows, so it’s definitely a change from normal worth noting.

Prediction: Penn State 24, Wisconsin 13
The Badgers have such a long track record of struggles offensively at this point that the burden of proof is on them to show they can score enough to stay in a game with a ranked opponent. If they can’t, then quarterback Rocco Becht and the Penn State offense should have a relatively low bar to clear in this one. The senior quarterback has nine touchdowns and no interceptions this season, and the running game finally kicked things into gear against Buffalo this past week with 304 yards on the ground. It may not be an avalanche of points again, but it should be enough to beat this particular team.
