Well, Vanderbilt is somehow 3-0 after escaping NC State last weekend. And now, we hit SEC play.

Saturday’s trip to Auburn is somehow one of the more likely wins on the SEC schedule? The Tigers are one of three unranked teams remaining on Vanderbilt’s schedule, and Kentucky just narrowly missed being ranked in this week’s AP Poll. So if ten wins is happening again… uh, it’s not, but Vanderbilt definitely needs to beat Auburn. What say the writers?

I don’t… I don’t care for Auburn.

With offense intended to the denizens of QAnoNC State, this is where Jared Curtis’s career truly begins. Facing an SEC D-Line (though admittedly, Auburn is oddly lacking the top draft year prospects we’re used to seeing from them), we’ll see if a) our reconfigured offensive line can protect… like at all, and b) if Curtis E. Bear the Courtesy Bear is ready for the step-up in competition, is the kind of QB who plays up to competition, and a third thing I assumed would come to me when I started typing this in list fashion.

Honestly, Auburn doesn’t have the top D they’ve become accustomed to this year, and their stats are inflated by facing Florida detritus DJ “DJ Roomba!” Lagway and Baylor in week one. Their QB has looked like a one man army, but he also has to do everything himself, as stud WR Cam Coleman left the poisoned trees to make generational wealth in Austin.

The Pick: Vanderbilt 31, Auburn 30.

The SEC Upset Pick of the Week: I just took us to take down The War Tigers in The Land of A Million Mascots where they’re 9.5 point favorites and you want more from me?!?! Fine. Ole Piss (+2.5) is beating The Jorts. That Jortsville is favored is the strangest line of the year thus far.

Vanderbilt’s offense came to life in the second half of Jared Curtis’s first start. The arm talent is undeniable, but the freshman still made some freshman mistakes like the assumed game-sealing interception on Vanderbilt’s last offensive drive. He needs to be more secure with the ball in his hands as he moves into facing SEC defenses. Curtis has not risked it too often on throws, but he has lost it a few times while running.

The defense needs to find some consistency. They will be lights out for a series, or even a quarter, but they have too many plays where not everyone is on the same page. The offense they are facing this week has shown the exact same tendency to be on fire at all times. Sometimes on a hot streak, and sometimes as a tire fire. Staying steady and making Byrum Brown and Auburn sustain long drives without making mistakes is the key.

I do not see the defense ironing out enough bugs, and I do expect Curtis to make some mistakes in a sold out Jordan-Hare for Auburn’s homecoming. Hopefully, I am wrong and can go get a lemondade at an un-rolled Toomer’s postgame.

The Pick: Vanderbilt 24, Auburn 38

The SEC Upset Pick of the Week: Why is Ole Miss an underdog at Florida? It’s only 2.5 points, so this feels a bit cheap. I get expecting a letdown in the week after their huge, emotional win over LSU and the returning Lane Kiffin. Florida is decent enough (see: win over Auburn), but I think Ole Miss can recover from a slow start and still win pretty easily.

I’m gonna go out on a limb and say that Auburn isn’t that good. They needed a failed two-point conversion to beat a not-good Baylor team, and while the score against Florida was close, the game really wasn’t.

I answered some questions for an Auburn blog this week and realized I couldn’t name two players who play for Auburn right now. There’s nothing that stands out to me about this team or this roster or this coach, and as such, even though Hugh Freeze is no longer Auburn’s coach, Jerry Kill will continue to own Auburn.

The SEC Upset Pick of the Week: ARKANSAS sucks. How exactly are they a touchdown favorite over Tulsa?

Gonna keep it short. Auburn is worse than their score against Florida suggests, and we are better than most of the season up to now would make you think. Curtis builds on his second half against an unsuspecting Auburn defense. We score early and duke it out to the end.

The SEC Upset Pick of the Week: Ole Miss, for sure. When will we stop doubting an obviously good RebelSharkBears squad? And they win big, too.
