Kansas State Wildcats QB Avery Johnson Shines In Defeat Against Cincinnati Bearcats

The Kansas State Wildcats lost their first game of the season but the lone bright spot was the play of quarterback Avery Johnson.
For a second straight game, Johnson was easily the team's best offensive player. He completed 30 of 50 passes for 292 yards and a touchdown in Saturday's loss to the Cincinnati Bearcats in the Big 12 conference opener for both teams.
The Wildcats dropped to 3-1 this season but it wasn't because of Johnson. He also rushed for 38 yards on six carries, which ranked third on the team. This came just a week after Johnson accounted for 90 percent of the offense in the win against the Tulane Green Wave. While Johnson and coach Collin Klein were happy with that production, they know at some point the team has to get more contribution from other players if the Wildcats are going to have a successful season.
K-State has a bye week to fully recover from this disappointing loss. That should give Klein some time to make the proper adjustments. The Wildcats return to action the following week against the Houston Cougars.
DID WILDCATS FIND A NEW OFFENSIVE WEAPON?
At this point, the Kansas State Wildcats are just searching for positives after their first loss of the season.
One of them was the play of receiver Derrick Salley Jr., in the defeat to the Cincinnati Bearcats. Salley had seven receptions for 140 yards. It was the best performance of his career with the Wildcats.
Now, he is considered another threat for the Wildcats on offense. Although it was a bittersweet day for K-State, it should prove the team at least has more offensive weapons than just Jaron Tibbs and Josh Manning, who had been the leading receivers up to this point.
The Wildcats have a bye this weekend but return to action the following week against the Houston Cougars.
