Clemson QB Tait Reynolds Could Be in Some Danger on Saturday

Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney has made it clear that he sees Tait Reynolds as the future at quarterback, but what if the true freshman torpedoes down the stretch?

Reynolds has looked decent, not great, thus far in 2026.

In five games and three starts, Reynolds has thrown for 816 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions. He has completed 64.8 percent of his passes, which is rather impressive for a first-year signal-caller, but he is clearly mistake-prone.

That's understandable. Reynolds is just 19 years old, and he hasn't exactly gotten the benefit of elite protection from his offensive line. But the pressure is on the former three-star recruit heading into Clemson's Saturday matchup against Charleston Southern.

Reynolds showed flashes against Miami in the Tigers' last game, going 29-for-44 with 295 yards. He tossed a pick and didn't throw any touchdowns, but the fact that he was able to finish near the 300-yard mark against the nation's second-ranked defense was something.

However, Reynolds will need to be considerably better this weekend.

Charleston Southern is a 3-3 ballclub from the Ohio Valley Conference. It lost to Georgia Southern — the team Clemson beat in Week 2 — by a score of 31-0 earlier in the season.

Clemson absolutely, positively should win this game going away, but that will require a breakout performance from Reynolds.

I'm talking 300-plus yards and a couple of touchdowns with no turnovers.

If Reynolds can do that, it would set the stage for a great close to the season for the Queens Creek, Az. native and would cement him as the Tigers' quarterback in 2027.

But let's say Reynolds struggles on Saturday. Then what?

Laboring against an OVC squad would not exactly do much for his confidence and could actually set him on a dangerous path for the remainder of the campaign.

For as much as Swinney has raved about Reynolds this year, nothing should be guaranteed for the youngster. He still needs to earn his keep as the team's starting quarterback, and if he falters, Clemson will need to seriously consider the transfer portal this winter.

Even as a true freshman, Reynolds should not have trouble versus Charleston Southern. Not with weapons like Gideon Davidson, T.J. Moore, Bryant Wesco and Tyler Brown at his disposal. This should be a breakthrough game for him.

Whether or not Reynolds actually takes advantage of this opportunity, however, remains to be seen.
