Memphis football is unranked in the initial College Football Playoff rankings — but the Tigers are still in the projected 12-team playoff field.

The playoff committee released its first rankings on Nov. 4, and the Tigers (8-1, 4-1 American Conference) did not crack the Top 25. No Group of Five team made the rankings.

Because Memphis was the highest-ranked Group of Five team by the committee, the Tigers were seeded No. 12 in the initial projection of the playoff field. That would slot them in with a first round matchup at No. 5 Georgia.

There’s still plenty of football to be played before the bracket is set in stone on Dec. 7. Memphis has to win the American Conference title to have a shot at reaching the playoff, and the Tigers might need to win their next three regular-season games to get to the conference title game.

That stretch starts with a critical home game against Tulane (6-2, 3-1) on Nov. 7 at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium.

After that, Memphis plays at ECU before finishing the regular season at home against Navy on Thanksgiving.
