Tennessee football quarterback plans to enter transfer portal

Tennessee redshirt freshman quarterback Jake Merklinger plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal, according to Hayes Fawcett and Pete Nakos of On3.
The 6-foot-3, 215-pound quarterback appeared in six games for the Vols from 2024-25. He completed 19-of-33 passing attempts for 221 yards and two touchdowns, while recording 38 rushing yards on 11 attempts.
Merklinger committed to the Vols over Georgia, Michigan State and North Carolina. He is from Calvary Day School in Savannah, Georgia.
The NCAA transfer portal will be open Jan. 2 through Jan. 16, 2026.
Tennessee will conclude its 2025 football season against Illinois on Dec. 30 in the Liberty Mutual Music City Bowl. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. EST at Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee. ESPN will televise the matchup.
The Music City Bowl will mark the first meeting all time between the Vols and Fighting Illini.
