Oklahoma hosts Alabama in the first round of the College Football Playoff in a rare postseason rematch.
The No. 8 Sooners (10-2) got the best of the Crimson Tide (10-3) just under a month ago, defeating them 23-21 on the road to hand Alabama its only conference loss during the regular season. Oklahoma forced three turnovers, including a game-altering 87-yard pick-six from Eli Bowen.
Alabama is coming off a 28-7 loss to Georgia in the SEC Championship game, scoring its lone touchdown in the fourth quarter. The Crimson Tide, missing numerous key contributors, didn’t look all that great in the loss.
Alabama has fared well in rematches after previously losing to a team in the same season, though.
The last time a team beat Alabama twice in the same season dates back to before anyone reading this was born.
Who’s the last team to beat Alabama twice in same season?
The last time Alabama lost to the same team twice in a season was in 1893, when it fell to Birmingham Athletic Club in the school’s second season ever.
Perhaps that history bodes well for the Crimson Tide against Oklahoma in the CFP.
Now, college football wasn’t even the same sport in 1893. Birmingham Athletic Club wasn’t a university either, although it dominated Alabama over 130 years ago. BAC defeated Alabama in three of four matchups from 1892-1893, and the Crimson Tide went 0-4 in 1893.
Alabama has only faced a team twice in the regular season five other times but has won at least one of the two matchups each time. The Crimson Tide defeated Florida twice in 1999 and went 1-1 against LSU in 2011, taking down the Tigers in a rematch for the national championship.
Alabama defeated Georgia in 2021 but turned around and fell to the Bulldogs in the national championship. It also fell to Georgia in the rematch in 2025 after defeating the Bulldogs 24-21 in September.
