Programs like Indiana, Penn State, and LSU are among many that will be looking at the transfer portal to find a starting QB in 2026. On Saturday, another major one joined the market that will open on Jan. 2.
The introduction of NIL deals forever changes the landscape of roster building in college football. Sure, recruiting elite talent from the high school ranks is important, but NIL contracts have turned the transfer portal into the NCAA version of free agency.
The portal now offers programs around the country the chance to make major leaps forward in a short amount of time if they can land the right transfers. There is no better example of how impactful the portal can be than Indiana being the No. 1 team in the nation with the help of Heisman Trophy winner and Cal transfer Fernando Mendoza.
January’s transfer portal is setting up to have another good class of talent. And if you are a school looking to replace a starting QB, there will be quite a few strong options available. Cincinnati’s Brendan Sorsby, Florida’s DJ Lagway, Nebraska’s Dylan Raiola, TCU’s Josh Hoover, and Arizona State’s Sam Leavitt are all available to the highest bidder.
Rocco Becht Joins Deep QB Class in 2026 Transfer Portal
Well, another high-upside veteran QB just joined that list. On Saturday, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported that Iowa State QB Rocco Becht also intends to enter next month’s transfer portal.
The junior has one year of eligibility left after playing four-years for the Cyclones. His best season probably came in 2023 when he posted 3,120 passing yards, 23 touchdowns, eight interceptions, and had career highs in completion percentage (62.9) and passer rating (150.7).
However, he has put up good numbers the last two years. In 2024, he threw for a career-best 3,505 yards and 25 TDs while also running for 318 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground. Iowa State finished with an 11-3 record and was in the hunt for a college football playoff spot.
Becht is sure to be on the radar of LSU, Clemson, Penn State, Nebraska, and Indiana next month.
