Can't Wait For Saturday Coaching searches paying off … for those who stay put

In the wake of the mess that is Michigan football, the news is not all bad.

Take Kenny Dillingham for instance.

The three-year Arizona State head coach would have made a lot of sense as the next guy in charge at Michigan. But he is staying at Tempe, Ariz., school and has been rewarded with a reported new five-year deal that will bump his pay to $7.5 million along with additional support for the football program.

Would it have happened without interest from Michigan? Maybe. Arizona State alum Dillingham has done excellent work at the school, including a Big 12 title in 2024.

But Michigan interest certainly helped the coach.

The current coaching cycle has obviously been a financial treat for the Lane Kiffins and Matt Campbells. But it has also provided raises for a handful of coaches, who made outside interest work for them.

I'm all for it. The life of a college coach, though it can be rewarding, is also treacherous. One rough season and you can be out the door. Fortunately, there is often someone ready to catch you after the fall.

Michigan still needs a coach. Perhaps Washington's Jedd Fisch is an option. Or maybe the school removes the interim tag from Biff Poggi. We'll see,
