This past weekend was a special one for the Day family. Ryan Day's son, RJ, found his college home – and it could lead to him facing off against his dad down the road.

It was a terrific weekend for the Day family and it had nothing to do with the Ohio State football program.

Ryan Day's son RJ Day took his first official college visit to another Big Ten program. The 2027 quarterback was on campus at Northwestern where he committed to playing for the Wildcats in the same conference as Ohio State.

Ryan Day could be dealing with an interesting story down the road

Coach Day is entering season No. 8 with Ohio State and he's under contract through the 2031 season in Columbus. His son is now going to play for Northwestern’s offensive coordinator, Chip Kelly. It's a full-circle moment for the Day family after Kelly coached Day at New Hampshire when he was in college. Kelly then came to Ohio State to call plays in 2024 and helped the Buckeyes capture a national championship.

Day should be in Columbus for a while and the only change would likely be him making the jump to the NFL. Day playing against his son is now on the table in the future, which would be quite the story. RJ will play out his 2026 season in Columbus at DeSales before enrolling at Northwestern early in 2027.

Ohio State will host Northwestern on Nov. 14 this season while RJ is a senior in high school. Day isn't expected to go into Northwestern and start, he's a developmental quarterback for the Wildcats. We don't have future Big Ten schedules yet, but we could end up seeing the Day family battle it out on the gridiron in one of the 2028-2030 seasons.

The 5-foot-11 quarterback finding a Big Ten opportunity is a cool outcome. He picked a spot to prioritize education as well. We'll see if the coach and son ever face off against one another down the road.
