Aggies Receive Major CFP Prediction Ahead of 2026 Season

Texas A&M is entering the 2026 season with significant expectations, and ESPN is adding to them with an early postseason projection that has the Aggies returning to the College Football Playoff.

According to a recent ESPN projection, a few of their writers have Texas A&M reaching the CFP for the second consecutive season. The Aggies are also projected to advance to the first round before ultimately landing in the Citrus Bowl.

While the projection is far from a guarantee, it serves as another indication of the respect surrounding Mike Elko's program heading into the new season.

Texas A&M has plenty of momentum to build on after making the CFP in 2025. The Aggies finished the regular season 11-1 and earned one of the top seeds in the expanded playoff before their season ended with a first-round loss to Miami at Kyle Field.

Now, Elko and his team will attempt to prove that last year's breakthrough was not a one-year occurrence.

A return trip to the playoff would be an important step for a program that has spent years trying to consistently compete at the highest level of college football. Texas A&M has the talent and resources to do so, but navigating the SEC remains one of the biggest challenges on its schedule.

The Aggies will also have to replace several important contributors from last season while adjusting to changes on the coaching staff. Still, there are plenty of reasons for optimism.

Quarterback Marcel Reed returns to lead the offense, giving Texas A&M an experienced player at the most important position on the field. The Aggies also return key pieces at wide receiver and in the secondary, providing a foundation for another competitive roster.

The schedule will eventually present much tougher tests, including road games against LSU and Oklahoma and home matchups with Alabama, Tennessee and Texas.

That makes the road back to the playoff anything but simple.

Still, preseason projections are ultimately about expectations, and ESPN clearly believes Texas A&M belongs in the conversation. If the Aggies can navigate their SEC schedule and avoid the setbacks that ended their championship hopes last season, another postseason run could be within reach.

For Elko and Texas A&M, the goal is no longer simply getting to the CFP. The next step is advancing once they get there.
