Alabama AD Explains Risky Kalen DeBoer Contract Extension

Amid Alabama‘s run in the College Football Playoff, head coach Kalen DeBoer’s name was tied to the open Michigan job.

Those rumors were put to rest when the Wolverines hired Kyle Whittingham days after the Crimson Tide defeated Alabama in the first round. Chatter about a potential contract extension for DeBoer went quiet after Alabama was blown out by Indiana 38-3 in the CFP quarterfinal at the Rose Bowl.

In April, the Crimson Tide signed DeBoer to a seven-year contract extension that will pay the head coach $12.5 million per season. The extension comes after DeBoer’s second season at Alabama. He’s 20-8 overall and 12-4 in SEC play during his time with the program.

On Wednesday, Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne explained the decision to extend DeBoer’s contract. The Crimson Tide desires stability at head coach, even while knowing that can cause “challenging times” for the program.

“Expectations at Alabama are high,” Byrne said, via ESPN’s Heather Dinich. “That’s what you sign up for when you come to Alabama. That hasn’t changed,” Byrne said. “What I also believe, though, is the idea of changing your coach every two to three years is absolutely ludicrous, and when you have a coach that you believe in, like we believe in Coach DeBoer, you want to have stability in that, and you will have a lot of really good times, and you’ll also have challenging times.

“Everybody’s going to face that as our world has changed, and so our extension with Coach DeBoer showed our commitment and belief in him, and that we really value stability at Alabama. And that’s been the case with Coach Saban, obviously, forever, and we want that stability to continue with Coach DeBoer.”

DeBoer had tough shoes to fill, taking over for Nick Saban, who won six national championships at Alabama.

Still, the contract extension is a gamble for Alabama. The Crimson Tide have not looked like a true competitor for a national championship during DeBoer’s first two seasons. Alabama missed out on several key recruits and transfers this offseason, with Hollywood Smothers and Cam Coleman choosing Texas.

Texas, Georgia, Ole Miss, LSU and Texas A&M appear to be in better shape to compete in the SEC for the upcoming season. Alabama could have had the opportunity to part ways with DeBoer if the team had a bad season in 2026.

Now, the Crimson Tide will have no other choice but to be patient with DeBoer.
