Katin Houser enjoyed a personal renaissance last season with the East Carolina Pirates, leading his team to a 6-2 record in the America Conference, 9-4 overall.

Houser also threw for over 3,000 yards, making him a hot commodity in the transfer market and earning him a spot on the Illinois football roster for this coming season.

Now the starting quarterback for coach Bret Bielema's team, Houser has a strong supporting cast of running backs, tight ends and wide receivers adding to expectations heading into this season.

Earlier this week, Fox Sports analyst RJ Young shared his list of the top 138 teams in college football, placing the Fighting Illini 31st (ninth in the Big Ten). 

The ranking came with a health dose of skepticism on Houser as Illinois prepares for its Sept. 5 opener. 

Young Questions Houser vs. Top Competition

Young questioned Houser's fitness for the job against top competition based on comments made in his recent article.

The Wildcats will take on two teams from last year's College Football Playoff, Ohio State and Oregon, who both return their starting quarterbacks (Julian Sayin and Dante Moore). 

Kirk Ferentz and the Iowa Hawkeyes were also mentioned.  

"At East Carolina last season, Katin Houser threw for 3,300 yards with 19 touchdowns and six interceptions," Young wrote. 

"But can he do that against a schedule that features games at Ohio State, Oregon and at Iowa? 

"I won't hold my breath," he concluded. 

Houser Brings Balance to Passing Game

Houser is expected to bring balance to the Fighting Illini passing game after showing what he can do last year in Greenvile, North Carolina with the Pirates. 

He spread the ball around effectively as seven players recorded 10 catches or more during the 2025 season with Houser in command of the offense.

The 2026 season brings another opportunity for the rising star quarterback to put his teammates in positions to excel.

The Fighting Illini have worked hard to improve the passing game all offseason through training, practices, team bonding activities and transfer portal additions.

The team's receivers and tight ends rooms are both stacked with talent including a trio of potential stars at receiver in Collin Dixon, Hudson Clement and Jayshon Platt, who transferred in from Florida Atlantic after a strong season.

The Fighting Illini went 9-4 last season but are playing with the house's money heading into 2026. 

Few expect them to duplicate their success, particularly against the Buckeyes and Ducks, but stranger things have happened and Bret Bielema knows how to play spoiler as well as any coach in America. 

This season, Houser will be along for the ride, which could go far better than Young or any other analyst expects.
