ESPN's Football Power Index has updated its rankings of the toughest schedules in college football entering the 2026 season, and unsurprisingly, the list is dominated by SEC teams.

The league moves from eight conference games to nine this season, and as a result, FPI doesn't see many cakewalks in the league. Nine of the 10 hardest schedules and 14 of the 15 toughest belong to SEC squads.

However, it's the Arkansas Razorbacks and first-year coach Ryan Silverfield that top the list with the toughest schedule in the nation entering the season.

Here's the full top 20 toughest schedules in 2026, according to ESPN's FPI.

Breaking down Arkansas' brutal schedule

Though things start pretty light for the Razorbacks in their Week 1 opener against FCS North Alabama, the difficulty spikes quickly starting in Week 2. The Hogs hit the road for the first time in 2026 to take on a Utah team that won 11 games last year, and that's quickly followed by a home stand against what will likely be a top-five Georgia squad in Week 3.

Arkansas has a reprieve against Tulsa in Week 4 before a brutal SEC stretch continues, featuring games against Texas A&M, Tennessee, Missouri, Texas and LSU. There don't seem to be any gimme conference games, with the most winnable appearing to be a home game against South Carolina and road trips against Vanderbilt and Auburn, all of which come mid-October or later.

What does a successful Year 1 look like for Ryan Silverfield at Arkansas?

Given the gauntlet of a schedule and the fact that Silverfield inherits a squad that went 2-10 a year ago, tempering expectations would likely be wise in this case. This is a heavily portaled roster in an SEC that looks to be as deep as ever, and it's hard to know what to expect from the Hogs in Year 1.

Assuming they can get the job done in the two non-power conference games, reaching a bowl game would likely require a clean sweep of the apparent toss-up games and at least one upset against either Utah or one of the upper-half SEC teams on the slate.

Silverfield has his hands full in Year 1, and though winning four or five games wouldn't exactly fire up the fanbase, it would represent tremendous progress, given the schedule.
