Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer didn’t have to look far when it came to recruiting a quarterback for the Crimson Tide‘s 2028 class.
Instead of traveling all over the country, DeBoer and his staff needed to head just two hours east to Alexander City, Ala. There playing at Benjamin Russell High School is quarterback Kingston Preyear.
On Friday, July 10, Preyear announced his commitment to Alabama, choosing the Crimson Tide over Florida and Vanderbilt.
247Sports ranks the 6-foot-3, 195-pounder as the No. 68 overall player, the No. 5 quarterback and No. 3 player in Alabama for the 2028 cycle. The USA TODAY High School Sports composite ranking, a ranking based on the composite rankings from industry leaders, has Preyear as the No. 42 overall player in the class and No. 4. quarterback.
Preyear transferred to Benjamin Russell ahead of his sophomore season after starting at Montgomery Catholic his freshman year. As a freshman, he led Montgomery Catholic to the Class 5A championship, completing 70% of his passes for 1,787 yards and 20 touchdowns.
Last season, Preyear led Benjamin Russell to a 12-2 record. He completed 62% of his passes for 3,026 yards and 34 touchdowns while only throwing five interceptions.
Another elite quarterback talent heads to Tuscaloosa
For years Alabama was regarded as a program full of elite skill players and defensive talent. Since 2020, the program has been known as one that attracts the best quarterbacks in the country.
Preyear is the latest top-tier quarterback to commit to Alabama. They landed five-star quarterback Elijah Haven for their 2027 class and have now landed commitments from top 50 quarterbacks in each of the last four recruiting cycles.
Since 2020 they have only two classes where they didn’t sign an elite quarterback prospect.
In their 2028 class, Preyear is ranked as their highest-rated player so far, according to 247Sports. He is their fifth commitment so far for the cycle.
