The biggest topic in college football right now is the possible expansion of the College Football Playoff. It appears that the ACC, Big 12, and Big Ten want to expand the field to 24.
However, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey has made it known he would not want to go past 16 teams. Brett McMurphy of On3 reported that 14 of 16 SEC athletic directors were in favor of expanding the College Football Playoff to more than 16 teams.
Every coach was asked about the topic on Tuesday, including Auburn head coach Alex Golesh.
"Nobody in that room cares what I think about the College Football Playoff," Golesh said during the SEC Spring Meetings in Destin, Florida. He continued, "I hope at some point maybe people will. I tell you, the College Football Playoff is literally the last thing that I've thought about since I took the job at Auburn. I thought about the things we got to get done for us to be highly successful. So that we're in that conversation."
The first season of the College Football Playoff was 2014, when it was just four teams. The tournament expanded to 12 teams in 2024. In that period of time, Auburn has not participated in a chance at a National Championship. The best chance Auburn had was the 2017 season when they entered the SEC Championship Game ranked No. 2. They had just defeated both Georgia and Alabama in consecutive games when each team held a No. 1 ranking. Auburn would lose a rematch with Georgia in Atlanta, 28-7, to knock them out of the College Football Playoff.
The first task for Golesh is rebuilding an Auburn program that has had five consecutive losing seasons. He will need to get the Tigers over .500 and show that it can be a program that can once again compete for championships. If Golesh can accomplish that, people in the room will care about what he thinks of an expanded format.
