The Auburn Tigers have done what many believed to be impossible by taking down the Georgia Bulldogs in Athens, 27-24, on Saturday.
It is the first time since 2005 that Auburn has won on the road in the South's oldest rivalry. And now, following the bye week, Alex Golesh and his squad have completely changed the narrative on what the rest of this season could become in his first season on the Plains.
Here is what you need to know from the contest.
Georgia gets ahead early.
It wasn't the best start for the Auburn Tigers defense, and in fact, they showed some rust coming off the bye week as Georgia got off to an early 14-0 start.
The Bulldogs capitalized early after a missed assignment from safety Sylvester Smith-Reed that later resulted in Georgia's first touchdown of the contest.
Auburn Offense looked completely different.
There was definitely a change in playcalling philosophy after the bye week for the Auburn Tigers.
Alex Golesh was seen holding a play-calling sheet on the sidelines, and the offense flowed much differently than with Joel Gordon, the Tigers' offensive coordinator, running the show. It has yet to be confirmed if changes actually took place, but the scheme certainly seemed more like what we were expecting to have under Alex Golesh, following his tenure at South Florida.
Bryum Brown was outstanding. He took care of the football, passing for 150 yards and a touchdown. And he also rushed for 115 yards on 26 carries and a score. He had great support from his offensive line, and his wide receivers stepped up in a big way. Chas Nimrod led the team with six receptions for 60 yards, and Keshaun Singleton found three receptions for 45 yards, both star wideouts each picking up a receiving touchdown.
The running game and extending drives appeared to be a newfound identity for the Auburn Tigers. Jeremiah Cobb stepped up in a big way, although it's not as impressive as the performance he actually had on the stat sheet. Cobb rushed for 61 yards on 13 carries and nearly averaged 5 yards per carry.
Defense holds their ground.
After Georgia's two early scores, DJ Durkin turned his defense around in a big way.
Some good adjustments were made, and they found a way to slow down the Georgia Running game and force Gunner Stockton to find a way to win through the air. The Bulldogs were only held to 113 yards of total rushing in the contest, a huge victory for the Auburn defense following the last two SEC losses where both Florida and Tennessee dominated on the ground.
With the team missing its star defensive player Xavier Atkins due to suspension, plenty of questions surrounded whether the defense would have enough to keep up with the top team in the country. The linebackers did their job in a big way. Elijah Melendez and Bryce Deas both led the team in tackles and had plenty of impactful plays to keep the Auburn Tigers in this football game and eventually pick up the victory.
A picture-perfect moment.
Following a questionable defensive pass interference call on Auburn Tigers cornerback Andre Jordan Jr., the Georgia Bulldogs were driving for a game-winning field goal. However, on the next play, defensive lineman Cody Sigler took care of business and caused a fumble on Georgia's quarterback.
This allowed Byrum Brown and the offense to set up a historic 34-yard field goal from Alex McPherson. A storybook ending for one of the most loved Auburn Tigers in the program
The win now moves Auburn to 4-2 on the season, and with a victory over the number one team in the country, The feeling against every opponent has certainly changed. They will be back in action next Saturday at Jordan Hare Stadium, as they will host the LSU Tigers.
