Auburn (2-1) wasn’t quite as close last week in the 44-39 loss to Florida as the final score would indicate, but we saw it. We saw the offense under new head coach Alex Golesh start to look like it’s supposed to. With a nasty run ahead, the Tigers need this home win to have any realistic hope of a good season.
Meanwhile, Vanderbilt (3-0) is still unbeaten after one of the most improbable finishes in college football history on NC State’s fumble in the end zone for a Commodore score and a 35-31 win.

Why Vanderbilt Will Win
The Commodore defense has been a rock against the run. It was just okay against CJ Bailey and the NC State passing attack, but it held up well on the 41 carries – especially the last one – and it should be good against an Auburn ground attack that wasn’t anything special against Florida or Baylor.
The pass rush is terrific, and now it gets to crank it all up against an Auburn offensive line that’s the worst in America in pass protection, allowing 4.33 sacks per game.
Why Auburn Will Win
The Tiger attack is heading up. It was great late against Florida, rolled up over 600 yards against Southern Miss, and Byrum Brown and the passing game have the explosion to keep pressing the Commodore defense.
Vanderbilt’s offense is fine, but it’s struggling on third downs, and freshman quarterback Jared Curtis is just getting going. He’s been strong so far, but he’s not consistent. Facing the Auburn defense that brings the pass rush won’t help.

Auburn has played three completely different games. It beat Baylor in a defensive struggle, rolled at will against Southern Miss, and got into a shootout with Florida.
This will be yet another type of battle, with the offense getting up fast and the defense needing to hold up. Two takeaways will be the difference.
