When Avery Johnson first signed with the Kansas State Wildcats, there were already whispers.
Many lumped him in the same category as Michael Bishop, Collin Klein and Will Howard as the best quarterbacks in school history. His addition to the program was that big.
And now Johnson has the chance to solidify himself as one of the top players to play the position in Manhattan. His senior season got off to a strong start Saturday at Bill Snyder Family Stadium.
Johnson served as one of the catalysts in a 71-3 victory against Nicholls. It was the first game in the era of Klein, who is now the coach after having a standout playing career with the Wildcats. Johnson did his part to make it special by completing 15 of 21 passes for 199 yards and three touchdowns. In the process, he surpassed Howard as the school's all-time passing touchdowns leader with 49.
It just seems this is only the beginning for Johnson. Everything is set in place for him to continue building a strong legacy. He and Klein appear to be on the same page. Remember Klein played a huge role in recruiting Johnson to play in Manhattan.
If Johnson can flourish in the new offense, he has the chance to own nearly all of the school's passing records. An impressive season could also enhance his NFL draft stock. Most analysts are projecting him as a seventh-round pick.
But this is more than just about individual accolades. The hope is Johnson can lead the Wildcats back into the national conversation. They were projected to finish eighth in the Big 12, but some are predicting them to be one of the top sleeper teams in the country.
And if Johnson can lead K-State to a conference title and a berth in the College Football Playoff, then he certainly will earn a spot on the school's Mount Rushmore for quarterbacks.
That quest continues next week against the Washington State Cougars.
