Badgers defensive lineman no longer with team ahead of Fall camp

As the Wisconsin Badgers prepare for Fall camp, their roster took a slight hit over the weekend, as BadgerExtra’s Colten Bartholomew reported that redshirt freshman defensive lineman Torin Pettaway is no longer with the team.

Pettaway, a three-star recruit in the class of 2025, was a Middleton native and was considered one of the higher-upside players in Wisconsin’s freshman class last year. His recruitment out of high school was one of the more notable ones, as the in-state recruit initially committed to Wisconsin, only to flip to the rival Minnesota Gophers three weeks later.

The Badgers stayed heavily interested, though, and flipped Pettaway back in the summer. He ultimately stayed committed to Wisconsin from there.

As a senior, Pettaway was a finalist for the Tim Kumrie award, which goes to the state’s defensive lineman of the year, following a season where he posted nine pass deflections and nine tackles for loss. He earned first-team All-Big Eight honors and was named the Big Eight defensive end of the year.

Pettaway did not see any game action as a freshman, and wasn’t expected to play much again in 2026, as the Badgers brought in quite a few contributors from the transfer portal, while also having several others step up into bigger roles.

Bartholomew reported that Pettaway was not being dismissed by the staff, but rather leaving on his own accord. It’s unclear whether Wisconsin is planning to add another player following his departure.
