The NCAA football landscape is changing drastically this offseason. Following news thatLSU football was going to bring in a former NFL player to the 2026 roster, college athletics conferences are scrambling to respond to that. The Big Ten is one of those conferences.
“Sources: The Big Ten is set to pass a rule today that doesn’t allow players to return from the NFL and play for a Big Ten school. Anyone who has declared for the NFL Draft and did not withdraw, appeared on an NFL roster or signed a contract with a pro league cannot be on a Big Ten roster,” ESPN’s Pete Thamel posted to X, formerly Twitter.
The ACC is expected to follow suit, per Yahoo Sports reporter Ross Dellenger. Dellenger then posted soon after that the Big 12 is also set to address the issue.

“The Big 12 is also considering a league-wide policy banning pro players returning to the conference, meaning that all four power leagues are set to consider such a rule,” Dellenger wrote.
Kiffin is set to start his first season at LSU, in just days. News broke recently that former Ole Miss tight end Dae’Quan Wright would be leaving the NFL and joining LSU. Wright was playing this summer for the Cleveland Browns.
That move was met with a firestorm of criticism from college football analysts. Kiffin defended the decision.
“They’re available to recruit. So, ourselves, like many places around the country, are recruiting them,” Kiffin said, per the Associated Press.
It isn’t clear how this will all play out. The SEC was also looking into the situation, as it appears LSU adding Wright may be against SEC rules.
Kiffin is no stranger to controversy. He left the Ole Miss football program during the 2025 season, while the team was getting ready for a College Football Playoff appearance.
LSU kicks off their 2026 season with a game against Clemson. That contest is scheduled for September 5.
