The No. 12 UCLA Bruins remained undefeated with a 17-7 win over Wisconsin on Saturday, bringing them a 6-0 start for the first time since 2022.
The Bruins are the sole team in the Big Ten without a loss. Saturday served as a statement win, as the Bruins were without starting quarterback Nico Iamaleava for the full game following a season-ending injury in last week’s win over Oregon.
Ty Dieffenbach filled in for Iamaleava, and had a solid game after filling in the second half of the Bruins’ game against Oregon. Dieffenbach completed 22 of his 33 pass attempts for 264 yards, though didn’t find the end zone in the air and threw one interception. Semaj Morgan led the team in receiving yards, bringing in five catches for 84 yards.
Both of the Bruins’ touchdowns came on the ground, the first coming from Wayne Knight at the goal line and the second coming from the three yard line from Anthony Woods with 11:36 to play in the fourth quarter.
Mateen Bhagani also put his sole field goal attempt between the sticks in the first quarter to kick off the scoring.
Despite what the score line says, the Bruins had control of the game for the majority of its runtime, holding the ball for 28:20 to the Badgers’ 13:57. They allowed just 208 yards of offense, allowing the visitors to convert just three of their 11 chances on third down.
What’s Next for UCLA?
The Bruins have a bit of a step down in competition over the next couple of weeks, as they’re set to host the Michigan State Spartans on Oct. 24 and the Nevada Wolf Pack on Oct. 31.
Michigan State is 2-5 on the season, and fell to 0-4 on Saturday following a narrow loss to Northwestern—their fifth consecutive defeat. Nevada fell to North Dakota State on Friday, dropping their record to 2-4 on the year.
UCLA won’t take either of these games off, though, as they are a great opportunity to have Dieffenbach further settle into his role as the team’s new starting quarterback. Currently leading the conference, UCLA will do everything in its power to make their way to the College Football Playoff.
