Bold predictions for Cincinnati Bearcats vs. Boston College

The fourth season for Cincinnati Bearcats football under head coach Scott Satterfield kicks off Sept. 5, with UC looking for a second straight winning record and bowl eligibility.

UC returns to Nippert Stadium with a new quarterback, new running backs, new receivers and a new tight end. They return three starting offensive linemen from last year's Joe Moore Award semifinalists.

"Our offense to me is not just one person that's going to stand out," Satterfield said. "We're going to have a bunch of guys that I think collectively will be a very good offense. Our quarterback's got to play good. If you want to win at any level, the quarterback's got to make plays. We'll rely on JC (French IV) to go out there and make plays at a high level."

JC French IV comes from Georgia Southern with a strong endorsement from that coaching staff and a history of not being rattled. UC has a veteran line and four running backs capable of breaking free and some new playmakers acquired via the portal.

"The vibes are high," French said. "I think we're all excited to get out to Nippert, especially me for my first time. I'm real excited to see the fans show out and get the win this first week."

Boston College has nothing to lose with low expectations from their fan base. Their quarterback Mason McKenzie is similar in size to French, but has better rushing numbers. UC defensive coordinator Nate Woody will have McKenzie on the run if all goes according to plan. I have the Bearcats winning by two touchdowns. Anything opposite of that may raise some eyebrows.

"Every game week is fun and I feel this is our most exciting year," fifth-year player and linebacker Jonathan Thompson said.

Why UC has an advantage: The Bearcats have gotten off to quick starts the past two seasons and need to do it again, with the entire month of September being played in Cincinnati. UC started last season 5-0 at Nippert Stadium before dropping both home games in November. A strong offensive line and new defense should help kickstart the season.

Why Boston College has an advantage: Many prognosticators have the Eagles picked at the bottom or near the bottom of the ACC. Not much is known nationally about UC, so they won't be intimidated, at least to start. If the defense can't contain McKenzie, who is stepping up after playing at Saginaw Valley State, it could be a problematic afternoon.

Satterfield mentioned the Bearcats looked at McKenzie when they were in the market for a quarterback. Now, new defensive coordinator Woody will be employing his new 3-4 defense on him.

"He's a good player," Thompson said. "He's got speed. He makes fast decisions. He trusts his speed and his ability. We've just got to get after him."

Satterfield also mentioned transfer running back Evan Dickens, who gained 1,339 yards and 16 touchdowns at Liberty last season.

"They're going to be able to threaten your defense by running the football," he said. "They're going to try and establish the run, get guys down to the box so it can maybe open up some passing game for them."

The Bearcats suffered a season-ending injury when South Alabama transfer Ty Goodwill, a safety, tore his Achilles tendon in UC's Aug. 6 practice. To help in the secondary, the Bearcats signed Louisville transfer D'Angelo Hutchinson, a 6-foot-3, 200-pound safety who previously played for Satterfield with the Cardinals.

"We pretty much came out of August healthy, other than Ty," Satterfield said. "We're going to have everybody full go for this week of BC prep. We'll see on "Hutch" (transfer Hutchinson). He just got here. He's still learning a lot of things."

UC vs. BC bold predictions: Bearcats will run for 200+ yards

From 2014-2023, Scott Satterfield-coached teams have averaged 200 or more rushing yards per game. Gi'Bran Payne brings Notre Dame experience and a hunger to please the hometown crowd. Sophomore Zion Johnson can be explosive. Fifth-year player Zylan Perry was productive during the preseason and gained nearly 700 yards in each of the last two seasons at Louisiana. Junior Cole Tabb had 445 yards at Stanford last year and turned it up a notch late in camp.

"These four running backs can all play at a very high level," center Taran Tyo said. "I think it's going to be a strong suit. Cole Tabb is a power back and all four guys have breakaway speed. That gives me a lot of confidence going against any team."

Said La Salle High grad Payne, a transfer from Notre Dame. "The room is very competitive. We've got to compete every day to establish a role on this team."

Cincinnati Bearcats will throw for 200+ yards

Since 2019, Satterfield offenses have averaged over 200 yards passing per game. French at Georgia Southern reached the mark seven times in 2025, one shy of Sorsby's production. UC has brought in good receivers each year, with Cyrus Allen becoming a fifth-round draft pick of the Chiefs after one season here.

"JV Gibson's had a real good August; (Larenzo) Fenner has had a great August; Malachi (Henry) has had a really good August," Satterfield said. "Cade (Wolford) has shown up every time we've scrimmaged and Isaiah (Johnson) has a ton of talent. We've got some guys that can do some things for us offensively."

Cincinnati Bearcats' new defense will reach turnover goals

Their goal is seven per game, including interceptions, fumbles, and turnovers on downs. They only had two picks last year, thus the emphasis on creating havoc in 2026. Safeties MJ Cannon (Bowling Green) and Jasper Beeler (Northern Illinois) combined for five at their previous schools, and Kenny Worthy (Washington State) was a magnet to the ball in camp.
