‘Too Much of a Distraction’ — LSU Predicted To Be College Football’s Biggest ‘Fraud’ As Coaches See Lane Kiffin’s Team ‘Imploding’

The excitement surrounding Lane Kiffin’s arrival at LSU has been difficult to ignore. However, not everyone around college football is convinced the Tigers are ready to live up to the massive expectations surrounding them.
In a survey conducted by The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman, 18 active FBS coaches were asked which team they believe is the most overhyped heading into the 2026 season. LSU received the most votes, with seven coaches picking the Tigers as the biggest potential “fraud.”
Coaches Raise Red Flags Over Lane Kiffin’s LSU
Kiffin has made major changes since taking over in Baton Rouge, but his aggressive approach has also created plenty of controversy.
LSU has been involved in efforts to bring back former college players who recently spent time in NFL training camps and were subsequently released. Among the players connected to the Tigers are former Ole Miss tight end Dae’Quan Wright and defensive lineman Zxavian Harris, both of whom are seeking another year of college eligibility.
The situation has led to legal battles and plenty of attention surrounding the program just days before the start of the season. LSU and Kiffin have supported players pursuing legal action against the NCAA as they attempt to regain their college eligibility.

That situation has not gone unnoticed by rival coaches.
One Mountain West head coach told Feldman: “I think all these things that are happening around LSU right now are gonna end up being too much of a distraction.”
An SEC defensive coordinator was even more concerned about how the situation could affect the Tigers once the season gets difficult. “I think it’ll be hard for them to build team chemistry. I could see them imploding.”
They believe the off-field legal drama, NCAA scrutiny, and endless headlines will create an environment ill-equipped to handle SEC competition.

LSU Faces Huge Expectations in 2026
Kiffin arrived at LSU with big expectations and has made it clear that his goal is to win a national championship.
The Tigers also built the No. 1 transfer-portal class in the country, with an estimated roster payroll exceeding $40 million after adding several key players, including Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt, along with offensive linemen Jordan Seaton and Aliou Bah.
Now, LSU will have to handle the pressure that comes with those expectations while dealing with the legal issues surrounding the roster. A slow start could bring even more attention and criticism to the program.
