The Colorado Buffaloes will not have to face Brendan Sorsby when Texas Tech comes to Boulder on October 3.

After weeks of legal back-and-forth that included Sorsby winning a temporary injunction to play next season, everything came to a screeching halt on Monday when the Big 12 took legal action to reinstate their rights to punish the university if Sorsby played during the 2026 season. The lawsuit put pressure on Sorsby to decide on the NFL’s supplemental draft, which he is planning to enter by next week.

Texas Tech Board Chair Cody Campbell also issued a statement that Brendan Sorsby will not be part of the Texas Tech football team this fall. The decision marks the end of a saga that began after he admitted he had bet on sports, including on teams he was part of.

Big 12 fallout

The Big 12 avoids a major black eye hovering over its 2026 season if Sorsby played when nearly every national talking point would be about Texas Tech and Sorsby. With media days coming in July, the timing could not have been better for the conference, and it could have had something to do with the Big 12 taking legal action this week.

In the end, the injunction declaring Sorsby eligible likely hurt him and Texas Tech more than it helped, giving the public something to latch onto and creating a pressure cooker of a situation where any decision other than him not playing would have led the Big 12 and college sports, for that matter, down a treacherous path.

What does it mean for Colorado?

For the Buffs’ sake, hopefully it means that the Red Raiders are a more distracted and less of a football team after losing their starting quarterback. Texas Tech will probably still be the conference favorites when the season kicks off in August, but losing the No. 2 player in the transfer portal is a tough pill to swallow, especially in mid-June.
