Brent Venables names college football's 'gold standard' team

The Georgia Bulldogs have won back-to-back SEC championships and three of the last four SEC championship games. Georgia will face a new challenge in 2026 with the Bulldogs playing the Oklahoma Sooners for the first time since the Sooners joined the SEC.

Oklahoma and coach Brent Venables will head to Georgia to play the Bulldogs between the hedges on Saturday, September 26. Venables, who was previously a defensive coordinator at Clemson, has a lot of respect for Georgia in advance of that matchup.

"Again, you're not going to sneak up on anybody in Ann Arbor or going to Athens, Georgia," Venables said at SEC media days. "I think they've lost maybe once in five or six years at home. Georgia has been the gold standard in my opinion for college football for quite some time now."

Georgia is 117-21 under Kirby Smart. The Bulldogs won national titles in 2021 and 2022. Georgia is looking to return to championship contention again in 2026. Georgia's game against Oklahoma will go a long way in determining if Georgia is able to return to the College Football Playoff.

Georgia has won 37 of its last 38 home games, but the Bulldogs did fall to Alabama last season and are far from unbeatable at home. The Oklahoma game projects as one of Georgia's most important games this fall with Sanford Stadium expected to be very loud for the contest.
