Brian Kelly warns Lane Kiffin of LSU expectations: ‘You gotta win a national championship’

Lane Kiffin’s debut season at LSU promises to be one of the defining stories of the early stretch of the college football season. After a messy exit from Ole Miss and an offseason not without controversy, Kiffin can make LSU’s investment worthwhile with his team’s on-field performance.
But expectations are high in Death Valley, and few know that better than former LSU and Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly, who was ousted from the top job with the Tigers during the 2025 season to open the door for Kiffin’s hiring. Kelly, now a member of CBS’s roster of commentary talent, says he has no problem with how his stint with LSU ended, but warns that Kiffin will face the same high expectations he fell short of meeting.
“I think the pressure is about winning a national championship, and only one [team] can win one,” Kelly told SiriusXM’s Danny Kanell and Roy Philpott, with whom he is a weekly guest. “My thought, my going there was to build a program back up in all areas, holistically. Academics. In the community. All of those things. I am totally fine with who makes those decisions, because that’s part of this. This is the big poker table. But at the end of the day, you gotta win a national championship, and Lane will be held to that same standard.”

Kiffin is well aware of those expectations, and after his controversial departure from Ole Miss while the Rebels were still in pursuit of a title of their own, has plenty of pressure on him from the college football world at large, even before you get to the expectations of LSU boosters.
We’ll get our first look at the Kiffin era at LSU this Saturday, with the Tigers set to host both Clemson and ESPN’s College GameDay to open the season.
