Buckeye fans don’t anticipate undefeated regular season for Ohio State

Friends, we have done it. We have made it through the long, grueling offseason, and we are now officially in Game Week! To wrap up the anticipatory portion of the offseason program, last week, our fan survey asked Buckeye Nation to chime in with their prediction for Ohio State’s regular season record. Today, we have the results.

But in addition, we also have the results of a larger college football survey done by our overlords at SB Nation, which asked fans to pick the winners of the two best conferences in college football, the Big Ten (clearly No. 1) and the SEC.

Question: What will Ohio State’s regular season record be?

I think the fact that 94% of respondents of an admittedly biased voting bloc picked Ohio State to lose at all during the regular season should be a major indication of just how difficult the Buckeyes’ regular season schedule is. With road games at Texas, Indiana, Iowa, and USC, and home matchups versus Oregon and Michigan, Ryan Day and company will be facing six preseason-ranked teams, not to mention the likes of Illinois, Nebraska, and Northwestern (with an offense led by Chip Kelly) in the mix as well.

So, I applaud Buckeye Nation for being far more level-headed than outsiders likely would have anticipated us being. I, for one, voted for 11-1 — the most biased of the semi-hinged predictions. I am on record saying that I believe that this year’s offense is potentially the best during Day’s tenure, and I have faith that Matt Patricia will be able to keep the defense at an elite (although, likely not as elite as last year) level, thanks in part to a dynamite transfer portal class.

So, while I will almost certainly pick the Buckeyes to win every one of those games going into their respective Saturdays, I recognize that anything can happen on any given Saturday, and the strain of such a gauntlet can have a cumulative impact on a team. Nonetheless, bring on the Longhorns, Hoosiers, Hawkeyes, Trojans, Ducks, and Weasels. I have full confidence that the Scarlet and Gray will be standing tall when it comes postseason time.

Apparently, so do most college football fans, as — despite the parity in college football’s best league — an impressive 42% picked OSU to win the conference crown. In the far less competitive SEC, the Georgia Bulldogs were picked by 56%.
