When week six rolls around, the nation will know very well what this Buckeyes team is going to bring to the table this year. It will be one of two things for Ohio State: either they will be undefeated or, with one loss, geared up towards a National Championship.
Or they will have slipped up more than once, and many will be scratching their heads about what this team is. I tend to believe the former over the latter scenario, but we will see how it all plays out.
Either way, when they get to week six, they will get a pressure release when the Maryland Terrapins come to Columbus.
This will be just the 10th meeting in all time between the two teams, and the Buckeyes are looking to stay perfect in the matchup.
When every Ohio State man thinks of Maryland, they think of two things. The first is Denzel Ward's killshot inside Ohio Stadium and Gus Johnson's "BBQ" call. The second is the absolute battle that Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes found themselves in College Park in 2018. The final score of that game was 52-51, and Ohio State needed an absolute miracle to get it done.
Other than that game, the average margin of victory is 37.125 points, with the max separation of 59 points in 2016's 62-3 victory.
Coming off a 4-8 record in 2025, the Terrapins actually have some real optimism heading into the season. This is a team with a very veteran coach and tons of talent on the roster that is returning.
The Terrapins' passing attack was actually pretty good when quarterback Malik Washington was in the zone. Washington finished last year with 2,963 yards, 17 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. The numbers aren't great in a vacuum, but the fact that he did that as a true freshman was impressive.
The receiving corps is a couple of new faces with transfers Chris Durr and Na’eem Abdul-Rahim Gladding, who add to a group led by tight end Dorian Flemming.
While the offense showed a lot of positives, the defense was pretty bad last year for Maryland. They gave up 175.6 yards per game on the ground, which was the 100th-ranked in the country, along with 226.5 yards per game through the air.
The best part about the Terrapins' defense is their two top pass rushers, Sidney Stewart and Zahin Mathis, who combined for 13 sacks and 19 tackles for loss last year. They were about the only positive, and they need to show up if Maryland wants to make waves next year.
Maryland's outlook for the year is just making a bowl game. If they get to six or more wins, they will feel pretty good about their season. If they knock off the Buckeyes on the way, they will feel great about it.
For Ohio State, this is a get in and get out game. Look sharp in this one, get out healthy, and get ready for the hardest stretch of football in the country.
