Jun. 20—***

During the final two weeks of June, I am using this space to count down the top Heisman Trophy candidates for 2026.

Let's go a school that knows all about winning the Heisman. It has seven, including four quarterbacks. John Huarte is the most recent quarterback winner from the school in 1964.

Why is he on the list?

Historically, then you think of Hurricanes stars, it is usually on the defensive side of the ball: Ray Lewis, Ed Reed, Warren Sapp, Sean Taylor and Ted Hendricks.

But Mario Cristobal has been looking to spice up the offense too. He brought in Toney before the 2025 and the Miami product had a monster season, scoring 13 touchdowns on catches and runs. No surprise, the son of NFL receiver Antonio Brown wet over 1,000 yards his rookie campaign.

He helped Miami upset Texas A&M in the College Football Playoff with a jet sweep for the game's only touchdown, then had another standout performance in an upset of Ohio State.

The lone concern with Toney might be his ability to survive the contact that is coming his way.

Important to note he is the first non-quarterback on the list. Receivers and running backs, even those as good as Toney, don't control where the ball goes.

The temptation for Cristobal might be to use Toney as a decoy, keeping some of the heat off new quarterback Darian Mensah. Hopefully, he forms a bond this summer with the new quarterback, who will also have one of his former Duke teammates to throw to too.

The Miami schedule isn't overwhelming, giving Toney a chance to pile up big numbers. The big game is Nov. 7, a trip to Notre Dame.

Toney is taller and lighter than the former Broncos star. Jeanty is coming off a strong rookie season with the Las Vegas Raiders, topping 1,300 all-purpose yards. Doubtful Miami will use him as much as a runner, especially with the returning backfield talent. But the more he can do, the better his Heisman chances. Most NFL people think Toney will star at the next level. By rule, he has to stay in college until the 2028 draft,
