Nov. 14—***

At the time, the decision looked a bit reckless to some, nuts to others.

In December, 2022, Rick George gave the keys to a Power Four program to Deion Sanders, who had only been a head coach at FCS school Jackson State.

It was a stroke of genius by George, who immediately saw his football program go from irrelevance to the home of "Coach Prime." Everyone wanted to see what all the fuss was about.

Colorado started filling Folsom Field again and Sanders drew a national spotlight to Boulder.

George on Thursday announced his plans to step down as Colorado athletic director at the end of the school year. He will remain with the school as a special advisor to the chancellor.

George, who played and coached at Illinois, was at one time considered a possible hire for AD job at his alma mater. It never happened. Pity. Wonder if he would have brought Sanders to C-U as head coach, We will never know.

I have talked to George a few times over the years and really enjoyed the conversations. He is a smart guy with big ideas. One of his best moves at Colorado, beyond hiring Sanders, was returning the program to the Big 12. It is an excellent fit for the program.

Perhaps with a reduced role in his day job, George will have a chance to get back to Illinois more often. He is Collinsville High School graduate.
