Sep. 17—***

Too bad the Big Ten preseason media kickoff is spit into three daily sessions, which means the 18 coaches are unlikely to all be there at the same time.

In the old days, when the Big Ten had 10 or 11 or 12 schools, the media kickoff happened the same day, providing at least a chance for a group picture.

If they had done one this year, it almost certainly would have been the last with the same 18 folks.

I hope any changes will wait until after the season, but understand that is incorrect. Once schools decide to move on from Coach X, they tend to do it quickly. That way, the search can start for the replacement and get that complicated ball rolling.

At some point between now and start of December, a coach or two or four will get let go in the Big Ten.

The top candidate is a guy on his second stint at his current school. Rutgers decided to run it back with Greg Schiano and it does not seem to be working.

Schiano entered the season one victory short of 100 at the school. He is still on hold after dropping his first two to UMass and Boston College. He is not going to get it this week either. The Scarlet Knights play Southern Califrnia.

In his second term, the best the coach has done in seven seasons is a pair of 7-6 finishes.

Rutgers will have a difficult time getting back to those numbers this year.

The only coach in the Big Ten who can rival Schiano's hotseatedness is Wisconsin's Luke Fickell.

He is 18-22 at the school with a lopsided loss to Notre Dame this season. But the soft schedule gives Fickell a chance to survive. No Ohio State, Indiana or Oregon on the schedule. The most difficult game against Southern Cal on Oct. 24 is at Madison.

If I'm wrong and everybody stays in place, my apologies. And great to have you back.
