Texas football is coming off a massive win last week against Ohio State. Steve Sarkisian’s team has been dealing with some off-the-field distractions this week. There was Sarkisian blowing off Holly Rowe after the Texas win, and then Arch Manning discussing an AI video between the two.
Now, the team is dealing with another off-the-field distraction, this time involving an assistant coach, per Tyler Horka of On3.
“Texas linebackers coach Johnny Nansen was charged with misdemeanor DWI last night, Steve Sarkisian says. The team is still gathering details,” Horka posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Sarkisian also gave an update on the status of Nansen.
“Steve Sarkisian says he does not know if Texas linebackers coach Johnny Nansen will be on the sideline for Saturday’s game against UTSA after his DWI on Wednesday.”
Nansen has been on the coaching staff at Texas since 2024, serving as both the co-defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach. His coaching career began in 1998, initially as the defensive coordinator of Cabrillo High School in California. He would move on to work as a graduate assistant at Louisville the next year. From there, he would spend time at Montana State, Idaho State, Idaho, Washington, USC, UCLA, and Arizona during his coaching career.
Nansen and Sarkisian have worked together in the past. Nansen coaches special teams and was an assistant head coach at Washington from 2009 through 2013 when Sark was the Huskies’ head coach. He continued with Sarkisian to USC in 2014. Nansen stayed with the team after Sarkisian was fired, and reunited at Texas in 2024.
