The College Football Playoff is set to undergo several changes in the coming years. Regardless of those adjustments, however, the 2026-27 schedule is already in place. Now, teams simply have to navigate the regular season and conference championship games to determine who earns a playoff spot.
Brad Crawford of CBS Sports recently outlined 10 guarantees for the upcoming College Football Playoff, and one of them included a subtle jab at the all-powerful SEC.

Crawford discussed topics ranging from Notre Dame and the ACC to the playoff seeding of a potential Heisman Trophy winner’s team. He also addressed how the SEC is likely to respond once the final playoff field is announced in December. If there’s one thing the conference has become known for, it’s arguing that more of its teams deserve playoff bids.
SEC complaining once more?
“Expect a handful of top-20 teams from the SEC to politick when the selection committee meets for the final time during conference championship weekend,” Crawford wrote.
“Vanderbilt (10-2) and Texas (9-3) drew the short straw last season. Alabama became the first three-loss, non-conference champion to appear in the playoff. SEC commissioner Greg Sankey may have to change his mind on CFP expansion if the SEC fails to lead the country in playoff participants.”

Crawford’s reference to Sankey centers on the commissioner’s hesitation to support expanding the College Football Playoff to 24 teams. The SEC has routinely argued that it deserves greater representation in the playoff field, and ESPN’s Paul Finebaum has often served as the public face of that argument.
There’s no denying that the SEC remains one of the two strongest conferences in college football. Even so, the conference has produced plenty of disappointing postseason performances. Not only in the College Football Playoff but also in bowl games.
SEC not performing like they once did?
To be fair, bowl game results often come with significant caveats, including NFL Draft declarations, transfer portal departures, and player opt-outs. Even so, the SEC’s belief that it consistently deserves preferential treatment isn’t entirely justified.
As it stands, the Big Ten has won the past three College Football Playoff national championships. The SEC enjoyed an impressive run from 2019 through 2022, capturing four consecutive national titles. However, the stars who fueled that stretch are no longer playing college football.
Despite that recent shift, don’t expect the SEC to stay quiet if several of its teams are left out of the playoff field. Then again, what if Notre Dame misses the postseason once more? the Fighting Irish might be the only program capable of making even more noise.
