CFB Analyst Spills the Beans on Why Dabo Swinney’s Time at Clemson May Be Up

LSU’s dominant win over Clemson in Baton Rouge has put intense pressure on Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney. Fans were expecting to see a neck-and-neck competition that would restore some confidence in the program.

The defeat was the most lopsided and humiliating loss of Swinney’s head-coaching career, as LSU defeated Clemson 51–10. What was particularly troubling was how Clemson was physically dominated in every phase of the game.

Colin Cowherd Says Dabo Swinney’s Time Is Up

LSU outgained the Tigers 644–145 and recorded 38 first downs, showing the enormous gap between the teams. Clemson finished with only eight first downs and little offensive rhythm throughout.

During a recent episode of “The Colin Cowherd Podcast,” analyst Colin Cowherd questioned the head coach’s approach to roster construction, suggesting that it has become unacceptable. Cowherd believes Swinney’s failure to fully embrace the transfer portal and NIL has done more harm to Clemson’s program.

“It would be a CEO today saying, ‘We don’t believe in AI,’ you know, or 40 years ago, ‘We’re not going to use the internet,’” Cowherd said. “To not embrace the portal and NIL, and I like Dabo, is a fireable offense.”

He also questioned what the future will look like for Swinney at Clemson.

“I think it took that moment. I think it’s kind of a tipping-point moment, As the CEO of a top-10 college football program, it may be time for Dabo to go. He has dug his feet in—rigid, stubborn. Like, that was humiliating, was it not?”

The offensive line was one of Clemson’s weakest and most concerning areas, as Matt Luke’s unit failed to establish the running game or consistently protect quarterbacks Christopher Vizzina and Tait Reynolds.

Former NFL scout John Middlekauff, who joined Cowherd for the discussion, pointed to another factor behind Clemson’s decline: the departure of elite coordinators. Middlekauff believes the Tigers have looked like a completely different program without trusted former assistants such as Brent Venables and Tony Elliott.

The criticism surrounding Swinney will not disappear after only one game. Clemson went 7–6 in 2025, and another disappointing season could increase pressure on the two-time national championship-winning coach.

However, removing him would also be an expensive decision because his contract reportedly carries a $57 million buyout in 2026. Swinney still has 11 regular-season games to prove that the LSU performance was an early setback rather than evidence of a larger decline.

A strong response could quiet his critics, but continued offensive struggles would strengthen Cowherd’s argument that Clemson needs a leader more willing to adapt to modern college football.
